camp skits
so, my church is in charge of doing the skit for middle school camp this year and we're taking inspiration from this song and 'Borat' - it's gonna be awesome. I need to invest in the borat swimsuit. There's just way too many opportunities in my life to use it. I love my life for that.

this is what I am going to name my child: Simcha
If I play my cards right, this is what my baby Simcha will look like
Yeah, yeah. "Your kid is going to get beat up at school for that name!" Well, it's for a girl, so it's okay. It's Hebrew, but I think it sounds Russian (sim-ka). And in Hebrew it means blessing, party, or happiness. How cool is that? "My name means party" It's like naming your kid Fiesta.
Bright Eyes' "Four Winds" via the Killers
"Four Winds" - the Killers (Bright Eyes cover) .mp3
The original song is from Bright Eyes' Cassadaga album, which I bought (a real hard copy!) my senior year of college, in the Fall. It was on the way out of town to go to the Fin and Feather weekend retreat for Krew. I listened to the whole album about 1.5 times, mostly because I got bored. It's a great album, but I got kinda creeped out by the first track, which sounds kind of like if your AM talk radio station got possessed and whispered in your ear at night as you were falling asleep. (listen to the track here - clairaudients)
Also, another odd personal factoid about "Four Winds" is that my Conspiracy Theories professor, a kind dumpy Harvard guy, would play music before each lecture that related in some way to the subject matter. Before talking about the Catholic Church and conspiracies about it being the Whore of Babylon (read all about it here), he played this song. I was impressed that he liked Bright Eyes (snobbery).
LOST last night, via Videogum
"We finally learn what happened to Aaron, which is that the long con lady is back, and she keeps projecting her feelings about Sawyer onto Kate, being like "You stole a baby because he broke your heart," and it's like, "What? That's not how things work" But sure. So Kate is like, "oh my God, you are right." Also, is that really what Sawyer's last words to her on the helicopter? How romantic. "Take an envelope of cash to this lady who I totes screwed over's house." Kate's like "Why are you telling me this?" And he's like "PEACE!" It's just like I always imagined it."

"God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion.
The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is
wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts
they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions,
it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ...
And what country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not
warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of
resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as
to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost
in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from
time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
It is its natural manure."
