In the year 2000: Herman Miller, LEED certification, pyromania

In the aftershock of finding out about the truth about recycling, I have become more interested in this whole "burning your trash for energy" idea.
Talking to my sister-in-law's mother, she said "Oh sure, my husband works for Herman Miller and they run their factory off of garbage. They're LEED certified." Whaaaat? Herman Miller, the creators of such genius design pieces as the Aeron Chair and the Eames Chair runs their factory off of garbage? Fantastic. If only I could afford any of their stuff...

Burning trash isn't all good either because of what it sends into the air. Everyone burns their trash here in Tanzania and most plastics are bad to burn, anything aerosal explodes, and metal just kind of hangs out for years. Maybe we should just consume less.
ReplyDeletei'm pretty sure this is different than just burning harmful materials in open fires. I looked around at the Herman Miller website and couldn't find exactly what their engineering process was, but if they're LEED certified, I think they're not just releasing it into the environment. or maybe they are.
