one of my bosses at church just gave me two full CDs of Beastie Boys. mmmm...

coldplay doing Billie Jean

Steampunk

heard about on Stuff You Should Know: "What are tinnovators?"
“In solitude I used to wander about the garden, alternately collecting birds’ eggs and meditating on the flight of time. If I may judge by my own recollections, the important and formative impressions of childhood rise to consciousness only in fugitive moments in the midst of childish occupations, and are never mentioned to adults. I think periods of browsing during which no occupation is imposed from without are important in youth because they give time for the formation of these apparently fugitive but really vital impressions.”
--Bertrand Russell, Autobiography

Why do I have a love-hate relationship with free-time now? And spend my time reading useless articles like "World Leaders in Jeans" instead of pondering or staring off into the distance.

Post-Postmodernism

To The Best of Our Knowledge: "Post-Postmodernism: Are We There Yet?"
- a place where the real and the imaginary had not yet been sequestered into different countries

Three kinds of postmodernism from Amy Elias (Prof. at UTennesee)
(1) epistemological postmodernism: Lyotard, a way of understanding the self and the world. A reaction to enlightenment and modernity. A way of knowing the world that cannot be explained by the scientific method. (called postmodernity)
(2.) sociocultural postmodernism: post-1945 in capitalist western nations. Suburbia. Baudrillard. globalization. the media, entertainment.
(3.) Aesthetic postmodernism: what happened in the art world in reaction to modernism. Mixing of high and low art.
*a desire for anyone to distinguish their own time - to name it. to find intelligent or cool ways to talk about what is going on - how the world has changed.

Christian Lander:
"an important part of being white is making fun of yourself."
- "post-wealth": generation of people who still have the drive their parents or grandparents had to compete in the working place now compete with their peers in any chosen area (environmentalism, authenicity in life)
- rejected topics: "Mayonnaise" "Stuff White People Like"

more on hipsters, i guess...sigh

" a generation of middle-class youths interested in an alternative art and music scene. But instead of creating a culture of their own, hipsters proved content to borrow from trends long past. Take your grandmother's sweater and Bob Dylan's Wayfarers, add jean shorts, Converse All-Stars and a can of Pabst and bam — hipster."
- TIME "Hipsters" July 2009

* doesn't that make total sense? If hipsters are truly postmodern, then most of their material will be borrowed, as "there is nothing new under the sun" any more. Creativity is expressed through pastiche.

Also, check out this article (ADBUSTERS: "Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization" ) because the title is funny and Adbusters is way ridiculous anyways.
"The hipsters who will be the dead end of Western Civilization are the ones who add nothing new or original and simply recycle and reduce old trends into a meaningless meme."

Give A Damn guys in plane crash in Nairobi

These are my boys. I got a text at 8am this morning saying that they got into a plane crash and survived. God help them. Rob is the one in the video.

Capital News: "Four Injured as Light Aircraft crashes in Nairobi" - “There were four people in the aircraft; they were rushed to different hospitals. Upon the crash people ran to the scene and put out the fire. The cause of the crash is not known but investigations are going on,” he said.

Two American photojournalists working for the ‘Give a Damn International’ a humanitarian organisation were admitted to the Nairobi Hospital and are being treated for burns.

A man working with the organisation told Capital News that the two were in stable condition."

Their Twitter: the most updates - GiveADamnDoc

"The survivors were rushed to Nairobi Hospital in critical condition. The plane burst into flames moments after hitting an electric post, leaving many buildings damaged...Witnesses said they saw the plane hitting an electric pole before crashing into a building where it exploded into flames."
