'Kicking It'
-
When I was beginning to think about going to seminary, I met with one of the heads of the Educational Ministries department at Covenant Seminary in St. Louis. He was awesome and told me to look up Social Entrepreneurship. At one of the websites, I found a bio of Mel Young, the founder of the Homeless World Cup. What an amazing idea. Now they made a documentary.

Darkon: Everybody wants to be a hero
I think the reason I love this trailer is because it provides evidence for an idea I have about why 95% of my guy friends love video games. I think there's an intrinsic part of us, as humans, that wants to go to war. Especially in men, there is a desire to fight a battle, to defend something, whatever. But it's there, and it doesn't leave. Maybe it's the desire to be a hero that then turns violent. Whatever it is, I think it's fascinating. And role-playing Darkon is comparable to playing Halo 3 for hours.

"Monster Camp"
There was another movie almost exactly like this a few years back that was really intriguing, but I can't remember the title. All I remember is a quote from the trailer where a girl was explaining why she did this. She said "At work, my boss tells me what to do; at home, my mom tells me what to do. Out here, I do what I want."
This stuff is fascinating, especially because (if you watch their interactions) they have the same types of drama that any sorority would have, or any other subculture/group. It's all just humans making communities and interacting with each other, just in different styles. Interesting.

Oscars: Animated Shorts
Watching the Oscars Sunday night was one of the most pleasurable experiences I can remember of watching the Oscars. Maybe because John Stewart was hosting (and I have a total brain-crush on him) and maybe because I tried to watch most of the movies nominated for Best Picture this year (definitely made it more interesting). Regardless, there are always a lot of categories I don't care about or have never heard of any of the films nominated. One of them is Animated Shorts. I will probably never see these things in their entirety, but here are some really great-looking trailers for two of the nominees. These are really cool:

Trailers Galore
I love love love movie trailers. They're so perfect and compact. Here's a wonderful page on Apple's trailer site giving all of the trailers for the Academy Awards this weekend:

Stop Loss
-
I recently saw the trailer for Stop Loss. My friend Jason is a counseling student at Covenant Seminary and is interested in specializing in men with post-traumatic stress disorder. He was in Iraq for around a year and a half. He accounts for many of the issues related to men as being a direct or indirect result of PTSD. I'm glad awareness is being raised, so that military people with it can get help.

Quiet City
I'm excited about this movie. It looks beautiful. The dialogue all seems like something that I would say.

Sigur Ros - Heima

Thanks to Claire for this - Sigur Ros is putting out kind of a film called Heima about them going back to Iceland and touring all over the country. I know next to nothing about Iceland, besides that Bjork is from there and that the Vikings played a trick, naming Iceland (which can actually sustain life) Iceland and Greenland (which is extremely cold) Greenland. People in the trailer look remarkably normal. I don't know what I was expecting, maybe these exotic fairy looking people who stare eerily into the camera.
The trailer is absolutely beautiful. Check it out here.
Kind of unrelated to this: I always wanted bands to actually do something creative with their music videos, apart from some kind of stupid guy chasing girl through the song type of music video like that one about the umbrella ("Had a Bad Day" - here). I saw a Decemberists video yesterday that's kind of different and cool (O Valencia - here). But what I think would be really sweet is if the musicians just hired filmmakers to do an abstract on the song and create some kind of side-by-side piece to go with the music that didn't even have the band members in it. That would be worth watching.

To take a small break from global warming...
I LOVE trailers. I don't know why. I love how they make me feel something in under two minutes. They're wonderful. Here are two that I'm especially excited about:
